Maverick was solemn and dispirited. "You know what is funny in this whole incidence?"

He asked Severus however Severus himself was clueless.

Maverick did not expect Severus to answer him. He himself told it, "I was aware of everything from the start and still I failed. I failed to change my destiny and protect what was dear to me. Life even gave me a second chance, but I still failed. I am nothing but a disappointment. My entire life I was a failure who either blamed my fate, you, or my father but you know what, deep down I am aware that no one is responsible for my failures in my life except me. No matter how much I blame, the fact remains unchanged that I did what I did. It has already been done and can't be changed. In life, you cannot change things but only modify them by reflecting on your past mistakes and when it's done spiritually, it's called repenting. I know no amount of repentance, regret, or grieve can undo things. I would be too greedy if I wish for forgiveness at this moment so I would not wish. Even when death is knocking on my door, I will not say sorry to you because that is the only way I want you to remember me. Severus, don't you dare die because a lot is on your shoulder. The world is at stake as well as your life and you cannot afford to lose it or else humanity will suffer. I know it sounds ironic coming from me, but you need to believe me. I was aware that you were following me when I was inspecting the map."

Severus stiffened when he heard he was caught.

Maverick chuckled.

"You still are a dumb fella. Never mind, coming back to the topic. Do not waste your time on the map since it is just a diversion. The map was given to Marquis by a stranger to my father saying that it contains a hidden treasure. I can not believe my father could be so idiotic. He spent his entire life solving that map, in hope of gaining immense power or some earth-shattering treasure however in reality, it was just an old map of shrines. It has nothing special but a concentric circle of shrines of Hades in Rivera."

As Maverick shared the news with Severus, he could not hold back himself from laughing. He laughed so hard that tears started coming from his eyes.

"Oh, man. That was so funny."

"I just need to re-read some ancient history and mythology books to discover the relation. It's hilarious to think that scholars of Rivera failed to decrypt such a pathetic piece of information" Maverick disdained however Severus didn't agree with him. He himself knew how intelligent Maverick was. He was a prodigy when it comes to decrypting. Of course, Scholars cannot match his level but for the time being, he kept silent.

Maverick suddenly became serious. "Severus earlier I was unable to understand what the real nature of my father was and what was the actual relationship between my mother and father but today I got to know. It would be a lie if I said I was not hoping for them to have a loving relationship, but reality hit me hard today. Everything became clear to me. I dare not say that I am a saint but still I was never as horrible as him. Slowly the things which were precious to me slipped from my hands as I was left to cry. First mother left me, then you left me, and now Melanie left me. Even though you came back, I couldn't actually say it is a comeback."

Maverick sheathed his sword and came close to Severus' neck as he started whispering. "It is true that I stabbed you to kill you, but your assassination was never planned by me. There was someone who wanted you dead so you can reincarnate. I don't know how and why he knows so much about you, but you need to be on your toes around him."

As he did, Maverick swiftly stabbed his core. Dark black blood splashed everywhere and Severus who was still standing there went in shock. Everything happened in a blink, so he didn't have a chance to stop Maverick from killing him because killing was never his intention."

Maverick went weak on his knees and was supported by Severus.

Severus' hands started trembling while his voice turned hoarse from fear. "MAVERICK.... Maverick, you can't die."

"You bastard. There are still a lot of questions that you need to answer. Wake up buddy" Severus cried like a child who lost his mother.

As Severus was crying, he experienced tiny moments and was relieved when he saw a pained smile on Maverick's face.

Everything was good unless he survived.

"Don't die Maverick. You just can't. You need to punish that father of yours. He played everyone and is responsible for every single suffering in our lives. You can't die before him."

Maverick raised his hands weakly as he wiped Severus' tears. With a hoarse voice, he said, "No. I can't kill the person who brought me into this world or else I would be condemned for patricide. I have nothing left to offer this world so it's time for me to take my leave but before I do, I want to give you something."

Severus was perplexed when he heard Maverick. Anger flared in him, "What can you give me in this situation. Can't you just keep hut and conserve your energy so I can save you" Severus was fed up losing people. Even if he wanted revenge, he never truly wanted anyone of them to die.

"Aah! You are too good Severus. I missed you buddy and when you die, I missed you like a mad man. I know you wouldn't believe it but I always saw you as my brother. Even after killing you, I regretted it and I regret it till now." Maverick smiled and held Severus. He tried standing straight on his feet and yanked Severus so their forehead could touch each others. A rather intimate pose you can say and before Severus could refute, Maverick started glowing bright white light.

SSHHHHH!

"I am a child of holy light and given the condition I am currently in, it's the least I could do." As he said he fainted.

Severus felt a huge surge of a strange energy in his body. He was perplexed since they both had powers that were naturally repelling and he knows it deeply because earlier when he was fighting with Maverick, he could sense the difference in the properties of their energy but now, everything was just soothing. Severus' injuries started to heal miraculously while his powers returned to the maximum level. Severus himself was shocked by the things that were happening with his body. In his shocked state, Maverick started falling when the light started fading. Severus quickly held Maverick, but it was too late. With a peaceful expression, Maverick slept for eternity.

Severus was dazed. It took him a long time to understand that Maverick was dead when he did, he strangled Maverick's lifeless body. It would be a lie to say that he was not feeling bad. He felt as if something important was being stolen away from him. Remorse hit him hard. He thought after claiming his revenge, the void inside his heart would fill but to his dismay, that void didn't regress but increased to a new level.

Unknown to him, the earlier blue circle now turned black. With black flames rising from the ball, it looked as if it came from hell.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Severus shouted on top of his lungs.

With his scream, the ball started shattering and the invisible barrier broke completely.

Thud!

Severus quickly jumped on his feet, holding Maverick in his embrace. Gently he placed Maverick down and covered his face with his coat that was lying nearby. He also picked Maverick's coat that was lying there and wore it.

Marquis and Gren were stunned on the spot when they saw Severus holding the lifeless body of Maverick.
