Chapter 7 Rubbing the Rope

Throughout the afternoon, Qin Yao never stopped and was busy in front of and behind the house.

After drying the bedding, remove all the bed planks and straw covering the bed and take them to the door of the house to dry.

There was an episode in the middle. When Qin Yao turned over the straw, he actually dug out a nest of dead mice. It was extremely exciting.

After finishing this, I made a broom from a bamboo pole and went into the house to sweep away cobwebs and shovel the wall. The mud fell down, and the wall became thinner visibly to the naked eye.

The quality of this tofu is so bad that even a heavy rain, not to mention heavy snow, can wash it away!

"What kind of life did you live in the past? Is this a human life?" Qin Yao couldn't help but complained as her face was once again covered in gray by the fallen wall mud.

This is not the end of the world where natural disasters and zombies take turns. It is simply incredible that a good life can be lived like this.

The Liu brothers and sisters who had already washed themselves blushed when they heard this, lowered their heads in shame, and curled up their bare feet and toes, trying to dig at the ground.

Because Liu Ji’s father doesn’t care about things, their children don’t know how to take care of themselves. Children in the village don’t play with them because they think they are dirty and smelly.

Even if they did nothing but walked a little closer to others, they would still be scolded.

Having lived in such an environment full of malicious discrimination since childhood, the four siblings were very sensitive and could not help but think too much. They felt that Qin Yao disliked them, so they silently took two steps back.

Qin Yao cleaned the wall, noticed the wind, and hurriedly compacted all the straw spread out to dry with bed boards to prevent it from blowing everywhere.

After doing this, when he turned around, he saw four children looking at him with shame and anger.

"What's wrong?" Qin Yao was a little confused. She didn't hurt them, right?

The four brothers and sister shook their heads in unison.

Qin Yao wiped her sweat and put her hands on her hips, and asked Dalang, "Do you know where there is dry straw?"

Dalang nodded and asked Qin Yao what he wanted straw for. Qin Yao pointed to their bare feet speechlessly, as well as the rotten straw sandals on her own feet that could fall apart at any time.

Dalang understood. Erlang, Sanlang and Four Niang’s eyes lit up. Does the stepmother want to make straw sandals for them?

In the late post-apocalyptic period, resources are scarce, and even a pair of shoes can become a resource that is contested.

There was an old man living next door to Qin Yao who specialized in weaving straw sandals and selling them in exchange for supplies. When she was free from work, she learned a lot from him.

Although it is not as exquisite as those sold in the market, it is perfectly fine for daily wear.

Qin Yao followed Dalang and Erlang, sneaking like thieves, to the rice field that Old Man Liu had just harvested. There were still a few piles of straw that he had not had time to move back.

Qin Yao raised her eyebrows, "Is it okay to just take it away?"

Dalang doesn’t speak, but it can be seen from his skilled hand speed that he usually does this kind of thing.

Erlang said confidently: "Dad said, what belongs to grandpa belongs to him, and what belongs to him belongs to our brothers. It is only natural that we take what belongs to us."

Qin Yao stared, this Liu Ji taught such nonsense!

But looking at the handful of straw in her arms, Qin Yao chose to shut up.

He signaled the two brothers to hurry up, and the three mothers each held a large handful of straw and disappeared into the field in a short time.

Liu Ji's home is remote, and when they got close to their home, the three of them slowed down. Mainly because the two little ones behind Qin Yao couldn't keep up, and they seemed to be out of breath. The taro they just ate at noon was completely digested after this trip.

“You, how can you run so fast?” Dalang asked curiously, panting.

Qin Yao replied seriously: "Because I am bigger than you and have longer legs."

Dalang didn’t believe it, but he didn’t dare to ask more questions.

Erlang took a breath and took two quick steps to catch up with Qin Yao, "Do you want to make shoes for us? Do you know how to knit straw sandals?"

This job is only known by the old people in the village. He and his brother also tried to learn from it secretly before and were almost beaten.

Qin Yao suddenly stopped. The two brothers who were following her stopped quickly to avoid hitting her belly.

But his tanned face was still a little red, "What, what's wrong?"

Qin Yao held all the straw with one hand, and with one hand free, she lightly slapped one person on the head, "What are you, your, your, so rude, you have to call me aunt."

The two of them were stunned for a moment, and then they felt relieved and shouted: "Auntie."

Qin Yao smiled with satisfaction, "That's pretty much it. When we get home, put down the straw and help me tear off the brittle outer layer, leaving only the strongest one in the middle."

The two brothers made a sound and put the straw under the eaves.

They are all very obedient children, and Qin Yao is secretly satisfied.

Actually, if they were told to call her mother, not to mention that they were not happy about it. She was also uncomfortable with it, so the title of aunt was just fine.

Sanlang and Siniang, who were waiting for them to come back in the house, heard the movement at the door of the house, opened the door and walked out. Qin Yao stopped the brother and sister and asked them to call her aunt directly from now on.

Sanlang was a little confused. Didn't he want to call her mother?

Erlang glared at his younger brother, "Idiot, it's fine to call him aunt. They still have their own mother. Who wants to call an unfamiliar woman their mother?"

Dalang patted the broken straw on his hands, came to Sanlang and Siniang, and urged them: "Sanlang, Siniang, call Auntie."

 Sanlang said softly, "Auntie."

Qin Yao responded with a "Hey" and touched his little head, "Go and help me look at the dried straw, don't let the wind sweep them away."

After receiving his task, Saburo smiled shyly, nodded, and happily picked up a small piece of firewood to make a stick, and stood by the straw pile, watching them carefully.

But Siniang suddenly rushed over, hugged Qin Yao, and said in a tearful voice: "I want A Niang, I want A Niang, I want A Niang!"

Da Lang looked at Qin Yao awkwardly. His sister was too young to reason, and Qin Yao was right in front of him. They were just about to make straw sandals for them, but he said that she was not their mother and asked his sister to stop making trouble. It didn't seem right. good.

Qin Yao sighed softly and waved her hand to the young boy in trouble to tear the straw. She gently opened the small pendant on her thigh and coaxed her:

“You can call me Aniang, you can call me Auntie, you can call me whatever you want, just be good, okay?”

Siniang immediately raised her little hand to wipe away the tears on her face, and smiled brightly at Qin Yao, "Yes."

“Siniang is such a good baby.” Qin Yao gently wiped away the tears on her face, pointed to the threshold, gave her a handful of straw as a toy, and told her to sit down and watch everyone work, and not to run around.

There is no yard or fence at home. Children can disappear in a blink of an eye, so they have to be watched closely to feel at ease.

After settling the younger ones, Qin Yao led the two older ones to start knitting straw sandals.

There is a special rack for making shoes, but the current conditions do not allow it, so Qin Yao used a hatchet to cut a few branches and use them as supports, which can also be knitted.

To make straw sandals, you must first process the straw and weave it into thin strands of straw rope, which can then be put on a shelf and woven into straw sandals.

Dalang and Erlang were weak and the rope they kneaded out was very loose. The only thing they could help with was straw pretreatment. Qin Yao did the rest of the work by herself.

The whole afternoon, Qin Yao was rubbing the rope, rubbing the palms of her hands until sparks almost appeared, before she finished rubbing all the straw she brought today.

As the sun set, the rope was rolled up and placed inside the house. Qin Yao didn't even have time to drink a sip of water, so she immediately called on the children at home to move the fluffy bedding and straw back to the house, and made two new beds.

In the main room, half of the bed boards were removed and only a single bed was placed. The space immediately became larger. The low table used for cooking was placed in the middle of the room, making this a multi-functional activity space.

The four children slept in a small room alone. Qin Yao brought the bed boards removed from the main house and widened the bed so that the four children would not be crowded when sleeping together.

The newly made bed smelled of straw and sunshine. Siniang climbed onto the bed and rolled around. She said in surprise: "Mom, it's so soft~"
