Big Bodhi

Chapter 14: False Mountain God (22)

Half asleep, half awake, Xiao Fu actually moistened his eyes and unknowingly felt a great deal of heartache.

Shaking his head and sitting up, he wiped the corners of his eyes, looked around by the moonlight and wondered to himself, “Where is Mother?”

The hut was small, with only a shabby wooden bed, which could barely fit two people.

The late autumn night was bone chilling and Wang had always let Xiao Fu sleep inside while she slept outside so that she could keep him slightly warmer.

Xiao Fu looked at the almost soaked pillow and couldn’t help but wonder even more, “Why did I shed so many tears in my dream? Mother, where are you?”

Putting on a tattered cotton coat, he opened the wooden door and a cold wind of the night poured down on him like icy water.

Xiao Fu shivered fiercely, but did not close the door, but stuck his head out of it and shouted, “Mother?”

Where could Mother go in the middle of the night? Even if she had gone to the toilet, she should have come back after so long.

As she stood in the doorway, the bone-chilling wind came in gusts, and Xiao Fu shivered, but his heart grew more worried.

He was nine years old, but because of his family’s poverty, he had already learned many things at an early age.

Suddenly sensing a sense of prying eyes behind him, Xiao Fu turned around and saw the same old wooden bed and the iron pot and cupboard in the corner.

On the side of the broken wooden bed was a pair of half-sewn cloth shoes, each stitch was dense and tight, Wang had used two pieces of thick cloth and the soles she had saved for a long time to sew them for Xiao Fu for the winter.

The feeling of prying eyes was intensifying!

Xiao Fu’s scalp exploded with numbness, but he could not find the source of the peeping sensation!

Once again, the simple furnishings of the cabin were the same as always, except for the statue of the mountain god……

Wait! The statue of the mountain god!

Above that dark face, two red and green painted eyes seemed to come to life, and they were staring at him with a malevolent gaze!

“Ah!”

Xiao Fu’s spirit trembled in fear, and a surge of urine gushed out from underneath him, ignoring the bone-chilling cold of the night, and he ran out of the door!

In a trance, the scene was still familiar.

Hadn’t he already run out of the door and into the streets of the village? Why was he back in the house again?

Xiao Fu was only nine years old, and even though he was very sensible, his mind had broken down a little after this scare.

He was frozen in place, staring blankly at the hideous mountain god statue with a malevolent look on his face.

Suddenly, the big mouth of the mountain god opened in a twisted manner.

Clatter, clatter, clatter.

A pile of snow-white bones was spat out.

Little Fu looked at the pile of bones, his gaze still bewildered, until he saw the gaping hole above one of the hand bones.

A small piece of bone was missing from the little finger of his mother’s left hand.

It was an old injury from a small finger that had been accidentally broken when she was washing clothes at the village head’s house the year before.

Her eyes gradually came into focus, and her heartbreaking cries rang out in the silent night air.

“Mother!”

A moment later, the voices in the cabin came to a screeching halt.

A short while later, the sound of chewing gradually came out of the hut, extremely gruesome.

The strange thing was that the whole village was like a dead village, with no sound coming from it.

The most important thing is that you have to be able to get the most out of your life.
