Everyone Tames Beasts: I End Up Taming Diseases

Chapter 21 - Alice's Self-Blame

After dealing with the corpses, Adrian thought about Gary’s torn body again.

Thus, he had the Armored Mane Pig dig a hole in the ground again. As for the burial, he did not leave it to the spiritual beast.

This was because the Armored Mane Pig had the habit of eating humans. Even after becoming a contractual spiritual beast, this habit could not be changed in a short period of time. It might even resist its master’s will.

Therefore, it would be fine if Adrian ordered it to bury some irrelevant human corpses. If the corpses were unfortunately damaged, it would not be a big deal. After all, these people had wanted to kill all of them not long ago.

However, Gary was their teammate after all. Even though he had a bad character, he did not do anything to hurt them. Hence, it was better to treat this matter seriously.

With a heavy heart, Adrian moved half of Gary’s remains into the pit in the ground, while Charles fought the urge to retch while carrying the other half of Gary’s corpse.

When they looked at the mangled corpse before them, both of them felt very sad. In particular, they felt even more sad when they thought about the scene of Gary’s death.

After all, they had experienced too many deaths today, and they had almost walked into the abyss of death. Thus, they were in low spirits.

“Why did Gary leave the camp?” Charles asked softly.

Adrian recalled Gary’s strange behavior over the past few days and pondered for a while before saying, “He took the backpack and left with some valuable items.”

“I think he left those marks because he wanted to steal these items. He might have done so to get back his 10 Silver Coins.”

It took Charles a moment to understand Gary after hearing this. Then, he sighed inwardly, not knowing what to say.

Suddenly, a crisp voice sounded weakly. “It’s all my fault.”

Adrian and Charles both turned back to look at Alice at the same time with joy on their faces. They spoke almost simultaneously.

“You’re awake?”

“Captain?”

Adrian saw Alice’s pale face and quickly ran over to support her fragile body. He quickly said, “Alice, you can’t move right now. After all, your mental strength has been damaged. You have to rest.”

However, Alice shook her head and repeated sadly, “It’s all my fault.”

“No, no, no, it’s not your fault,” said Adrian quickly when he saw the girl’s remorseful look. “Gary ended up like this because he didn’t listen to you and left the camp without permission during the night watch.”

Charles hurriedly nodded and agreed with Adrian’s words. He consoled Alice by saying, “That’s right, it’s not your fault at all. You didn’t do anything wrong. I can tell that you’re very diligent in helping us capture the spiritual beasts.”

However, Alice was very depressed. She could not listen to anything. She only remembered that when she organized the beast-catching team, she had promised to protect everyone.

However…

At the thought of Gary’s miserable state, Alice felt even more miserable. Two streams of warm tears rolled down her cheeks uncontrollably.

Adrian couldn’t help but be moved when he saw this. One had to know that even though their Captain looked as weak as an ordinary girl…

… they knew that even in the face of the most difficult dangers, Alice had never been afraid, much less shed a single tear!

Adrian knew that Alice’s mental strength was still in a very empty state. That was why she had lost control of her mental state and showed such a kind side.

“Alice, look at me.” Adrian gently clasped Alice’s arms. He looked into Alice’s beautiful blue eyes with a serious expression.

Alice didn’t know what Adrian was trying to do, but she obeyed instinctively and looked into his eyes. She quickly caught a glimpse of genuine emotion in them, which instantly gave her an odd feeling.

Adrian looked at Alice seriously and said sincerely, “Alice, you have to remember what I said. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Gary’s death has nothing to do with you.”

“You’ve done your duty.”

“Even if these tragic events ultimately happen…”

“… you have to know that you did nothing wrong!”

As Alice listened to Adrian’s words, her tears of sorrow fell again. “If,” she murmured, “if I’d paid more attention to him and stopped him more firmly, would he— would he not have died…”

Adrian wiped Alice’s tears away with his fingers and said softly, “Alice, it has already happened. We must take it in stride.”

“Please stop blaming yourself. After all, even Gary wouldn’t blame you.”

Alice murmured, “Really?”

Adrian nodded seriously. “Of course!”

Upon hearing this, Alice felt strangely relieved.

However, her vision suddenly became blurry and the familiar feeling of sleepiness returned.

Alice didn’t want to sleep. She wanted to try her best to open her eyes as she still had to lead the team out of the Spiritual Beast Forest.

However, she felt her eyelids getting heavier and heavier. At this moment, she vaguely heard an extremely gentle voice. “Sleep well. We will take you away.”

Then, Alice finally fell into a deep sleep.

Seeing that Alice had fallen asleep, Adrian carried her on his back and said slowly, “Charles, let’s go. We’re going to leave the Spiritual Beast Forest.”

“Alright, alright.” Charles nodded and smiled as he gave Adrian a thumbs up. There was admiration in his eyes as he said, “Adrian, you’re really something. You actually coaxed Captain as if you were coaxing a little girl.”

Adrian shook his head and smiled, but didn’t say anything. He was very pleased to be able to help Alice.

Charles suddenly pointed at the weak Fire Demon Lizard and said, “Adrian, what should we do with the spiritual beast that killed Gary? Should we kill it?”

“It followed its master’s orders to do so. Thus, it’s useless to kill it. Let it live in the Spiritual Beast Forest in the future,” said Adrian softly as he looked at the Fire Demon Lizard sympathetically.

Adrian did not know why the Fire Demon Lizard was still alive. It had been ill for so long, yet it could still breathe.

Furthermore, it seemed to be gradually recovering its strength, which made Adrian very confused.

Suddenly, Adrian noticed the burn on the leg of the Fire Demon Lizard. He hesitated for a moment before eventually taking out a few bottles of healing potion from his backpack and pouring it on its body.

“You’ll live in the forest from now on. You’re free.”
