The Blue Eyes

Chapter 41 - WEREWOLVES' EVOLUTION

"How could you say that?"

Kris knew very well that the answer would surprise Kevin, but he could only nod when the scientist asked him with a horrified expression.

"Can you tell me the chronology of Blue's disappearance? I was so shocked when you suddenly called me and said that Blue was missing."

Kris sighed at Kevin's question, but then he started explaining, "I got a call from Blue's school, they asked me why Blue was not attending school today. Usually, Blue always went to school diligently, so they were worried about Blue's absence. I didn't know why Blue didn't go to school, so I decided to go straight to her apartment to look for her. She wasn't there, so I decided to look elsewhere, including the cafe where she worked part-time, but I still couldn't find her. That's why I called you."

Kevin was stunned for a moment. "Are you sure she was kidnapped by a werewolf? Perhaps, Blue ran away because she's mad at me. Yesterday, we argued before I went to see you," he then voiced his thoughts.

"You fought yesterday?" Kris asked, and Kevin nodded. "Why did you fight with her?" He asked again.

Kevin did not answer immediately. The young scientist bit his lower lip and looked nervous.

Kris patiently waited for Kevin's answer as he didn't want to make him feel pressured.

"Blue accused you of murdering Andre," Kevin finally answered in a low voice.

Kevin's answer made Kris's eyes widen. "She accused me? Do you believe in her accusation?"

"If I believed in her, the two of us wouldn't have fought yesterday," Kevin replied.

It made sense. Kevin and Blue fought over disagreements. If Kevin had believed in Blue yesterday, the two of them would not have gotten into a fight. Kris subconsciously smiled a little at the thought.

"Why are you smiling?" Kevin asked when he saw Kris suddenly smiled for no reason.

Kris quickly stopped smiling, then he looked away from the human and said, "I'm just happy that you trusted me."

This time, it was Kevin's turn to smile. "I will always believe in you, so you don't have to worry," said the scientist.

Hearing that, Kris turned his face back to Kevin. He was immediately welcomed by the view of the smiling Kevin. The handsome scientist smiled sincerely at him, and the smile warmed his lonely heart. It made him return the smile with the same sincerity.

"But, we still have to find Blue," Kevin said, destroying the peaceful atmosphere that enveloped them for a moment.

Kris cursed in his heart because Kevin did not let him calm down even for a moment.

"I still believe Blue's disappearance has something to do with werewolves," Kris spoke after he sighed.

"Why can you be so sure of that?" Asked Kevin.

"Blue's scents disappeared in her apartment, and I couldn't find her scents anywhere," the werewolf answered, but Kevin didn't seem to understand, so he added, "Normally, I could easily find someone just by following their scents, but I could do that this time. It seems that a werewolf had concealed Blue's scents."

Kevin seemed to be shocked by the new information. "Can you conceal the scents like that?" He asked again.

The werewolf shook his head before he replied, "Didn't I tell you that I'm different from other werewolves? I'm technically weaker than them."

Kris's answer made Kevin frown. "But, why? Aren't you both werewolves? Are your rates of evolution not the same?" He asked again.

Kris sighed at Kevin's insistent question. "Kevin, you just had an accident, you should sleep now," said the werewolf.

But, Kevin didn't flinch. "You are always like that. You always refuse to explain the truth whenever I ask. Actually, what else are you hiding from me?" With a little anger, he asked again.

Kris felt discouraged to see Kevin started to get angry. He realized that he could never win if he argued with the scientist. In the end, it must be him who gave in.

"I will tell you one thing, but can you promise me one thing?" Kris voiced a bargain.

Kevin's eyes narrowed at what Kris said, and then he asked back, "What do I have to promise you?"

"I want you to go to sleep right away after I tell you this one thing," Kris replied.

"What? It's not even 7 PM yet! Why do I have to sleep when I'm not sleepy at all?"

"Well, if you don't want to promise me, then I'm not going to tell either."

Finally, Kris won after repeatedly giving in to Kevin. This time, the burly man didn't want to let Kevin win even though the young scientist kept nagging him.

Seeing that Kris remained steadfast in his stance, Kevin finally promised to go to sleep right away after Kris told him. This time, it was Kevin who had to lose. Kris grinned triumphantly while Kevin couldn't stop grumbling.

"We didn't evolve naturally," Kris finally answered a question that intrigued Kevin tonight.

The answer made Kevin gasp. "What do you mean? How can you not evolve naturally?" With more curiosity, he asked.

"The werewolves first appeared in 1980. At that time, they still couldn't control their power, they even lost their minds and acted like beasts. It was only around 2000 that they experienced very significant development. They could control their powers, they could change shape at will, they had a mind, they could talk, and they could live like humans. But, their development didn't happen naturally. The development of werewolves was due to a special formula, a formula that was deliberately created to create stronger werewolves."

Kevin was astounded to hear Kris's explanation. "Special formula? A formula deliberately created to make the werewolves stronger? Did the werewolves create that formula?" He asked curiously.

Kris looked at Kevin silently after hearing the scientist's question. The werewolf didn't seem to intend to answer Kevin's question as he said, "You have to sleep now."

Those words made Kevin chuckle in disapproval. "But, you haven't answered my question!" He insisted stubbornly.

Kris did not flinch as he remained loyal to his flat face. Kevin started showering him with puppy eyes, but he didn't budge.

"You promised, Kevin. If you continue like this, I won't tell you anything next time."

Kris's tone sounded like a parent intimidated his child, threatening not to tell a bedtime story again because the child was naughty and unwilling to obey. But, Kevin did look like a five-year-old boy with his innocent eyes and lips that pouted forward like a duck.

'Is he really a genius scientist who was usually dignified and looked cool?' Kris couldn't help but wonder.

"You don't want to answer my question? I promise that's the last one!" Kevin hadn't given up and was still begging.

Fortunately, Kris was already immune to Kevin's begging. Without saying anything, he suddenly got up from his seat, then lifted Kevin's body, and slung the scientist's body on his right shoulder very easily. This inevitably made Kevin shrieked in surprise.

Kris didn't flinch and walked casually toward the scientist's room. He looked like a laborer in the market carrying rice sacks.

Once they arrived in Kevin's room, Kris slowly laid Kevin's body on the bed.

"Why are you doing this to me?" Kevin screamed a little even though Kris had put him down. Maybe his pride was hurt because Kris could easily lift his definitely-not-small body. For Kris, lifting Kevin's body was like lifting a sheet of paper.

"Because you are such a naughty kid!" Kris answered as he crossed his arms across his chest.

Kevin was just about to get up from his lying position, but Kris quickly pushed him down so that he laid back on the bed. Not only pushing, but suddenly Kris's big body was pressing on him so that Kevin was unable to move.

"Obey me, or I will do bad things to you tonight," threatened Kris.

Kevin swallowed nervously at Kris's threat. "O-okay, I'm going to sleep," he stuttered as he gave up.

Satisfied with Kevin's answer, Kris finally lifted his body and returned to stand beside Kevin's bed. His eyes were still staring sharply at Kevin, and it made Kevin's guts shrink. He finally pulled the blanket and got ready to sleep.

Seeing that, Kris finally smiled a little.

The werewolf was about to turn around to leave Kevin's room, but the voice of the owner of the room stopped him.

"Don't go."

Those two words were enough to make Kris paused and kept looking at Kevin's eyes intently. Kevin's eyes flashed with fear, and he could see it.

"You want me to sleep here?" Kris asked.

Kevin looked away from Kris after hearing the question. And, even though the question did not get an answer, Kris's smile still grew. 'Silence means yes, right?' Kris finally laid down beside Kevin, who until now still avoiding eye contact with him. The young man even deliberately changed his sleeping position so now he wasn't facing Kris. The taller man could only grin seeing that.

"Good night, Kev," the werewolf whispered. That was the first time he addressed the scientist as 'Kev' and not Kevin.

The whisper did not get an answer. It turned out that Kevin had fallen into a dreamland. Not too long ago the young scientist insisted that he was not yet sleepy, but now he was sleeping soundly, even with the light on.

Kris didn't want to disturb Kevin's rest either. Very slowly and trying not to make a sound, he reached for the phone from his pocket, then quietly sent a message to someone: "I want to see you tomorrow."
